Jim Broughton Head Coach 20th Season

In 2013, the Chargers reached the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East semifinals after posting a 14-10 record in conference play throughout the season.

Under his direction, the Chargers captured The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) titles in 1998 and 1999 and were the runners-up in 2000. He was TCCC Coach of the Year in both of the championship years and took the 1999 squad to the ECAC Division III New England Tournament. Coach Broughton came to New London following two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Southern Maine. He was a four-year starter for the Huskies and an All-American in both 1991 and 1992. His teams made three trips to the NCAA Division III College World Series, winning the national championship in 1991. He graduated from Southern Maine in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in History, while minoring in Elementary Education. In the fall of 2003, Coach Broughton was inducted into the University of Southern Maine’s Hall of Fame for his efforts on the baseball field. He still ranks in the top 15 in several offensive categories including games played, at bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, runs batted in, total bases, walks and stolen bases.

2013 Season Review The Colby-Sawyer baseball team earned the third seed in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tournament after posting a 14-10 record. The Chargers have reached a conference tournament in 17 of the past 18 seasons. Colby-Sawyer fell to eventual NAC champion, Husson, 1-0 in the first game of the tournament and then was eliminated by Castleton 5-4 in the teams’ second game.

Senior Tyler Stotz (Amesbury, Mass.), junior Vinny Monahan (Foxboro, Mass.), senior Cameron Knight (Cambridge, Mass.) and junior Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.) were named to the All-NAC Second Team. Lapple led the Chargers with a .373 batting average and 18 stolen bases. He recorded 47 hits, 12 RBI and was tied for the team lead with 20 runs scored. Lapple also led the team with a .484 slugging percentage.

The 2013 pitching staff had another stellar year after a record setting 2012. This year’s staff recorded the program’s second best earned run average of 4.00 and held the opponent’s batting average to a school record .280. After leading the nation last season in fewest walks per nine innings at 2.14, this year’s squad ranked 11th at 2.31. Other program records included 21 complete games and nine shutouts.

Stotz finished the season second on the team with a .327 batting average. He was tied for the team lead with 20 runs scored and three triples. Stotz finished his career with the sixth most stolen bases (34) and the most putouts (746). Knight led Colby-Sawyer with 18 RBI and was third with a .305 batting average. He was second on the team with six doubles and a slugging percentage of .419. Knight had the third most runs scored with 17 and tied for the most sacrifices with five.

Junior Kevin Keith (Quincy, Mass.) led the pitching staff and was named North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Pitcher of the Year and All-NAC First Team. He also was named New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England Second Team and D3Baseball.com All-New England Second Team. Keith finished the season with conference highs in wins (8), shutouts (4) and strikeouts (61), while posting a sparkling 0.95 ERA. He ended the season with a 0.97 ERA and ranked 3rd in the nation. Keith added a pair of saves and became the program’s all-time leader with five. The eight wins ranked him 28th in the nation and is a Colby-Sawyer single-season record. His seven complete games ranked him 10th in the country and tied a school record, while the four shutouts and 61 strikeouts set new records. Keith also ranked 8th in the nation in strikeout/walk ratio at 8.71, 25th in walks allowed per nine innings at .97 and 34th in WHIP at .96. He earned three NAC Pitcher of the Week awards, as well as, an ECAC Pitcher of the Week nod.

Monahan played and started in 38 of the team’s 39 games. He ranked second on the team with 15 RBI and was fourth in hits (30), stolen bases (9) and runs scored (16).

Colby-Sawyer College Athletic Facilities

The Dan and Kathleen Hogan Sports Center is the heart of indoor athletics and fitness on campus. The 63,000-square-foot facility features a competition-size swimming pool (Knight Natatorium), field house with basketball and volleyball courts, an aerobics room, and racquetball, squash, walleyball and handball courts.

There is also a fully equipped fitness center for team use, for individual athletes and for students’ personal fitness. Mercer Hall, which recently underwent a full renovation, houses the Ray Indoor Climbing Wall, as well as a human performance laboratory that provides computerized health and fitness assessments.

Dedicated in October of 1999 and renamed in 2013, the Kelsey Athletic Campus features some of New England’s finest facilities. The campus now includes the Sally Shaw Veitch Track & Field, while still featuring a 120 x 80 yard soccer field and a baseball field. The soccer field features bleachers with seating for 300 spectators to sit and cheer on the Chargers.

Also included in the outdoor athletic facilities are the Kelsey Tennis Courts, recently refinished in U.S. Open blue, and Mercer Field, another magnificent natural grass field.
